Share Data checks all the items in the portfolio with the relevant registrar to establish that they were still current at the date of death and what the precise quantity of each holding was.

We also lodge a certified copy of the Death Certificate with each registrar. This prevents any unauthorised dealing in the shares. However, unless a stop is put on, dividends will continue to be sent out to the deceased. Share Data will therefore arrange for the payments to be withheld until they can be redrawn in favour of the executors or beneficiaries.

We are then able to produce a complete list of all the securities held by the deceased which will be used for the probate valuation.

Tips:

• List all addresses for the deceased within the past 5 years
• Ask registrars to withhold dividend payments
• Make a comprehensive list of the shareholdings
