What is an apostille?

An apostille is a government-issued certificate verifying the authenticity of a public document, allowing it to be legally recognized in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention. While an apostille confirms the document’s signature, seal, or stamp, it does not verify the accuracy of its contents.

Types of documents eligible for apostille:

• Court documents
• Administrative documents
• Notarial Acts or solicitor-signed papers
• Official certificates (e.g., diplomas, birth certificates)

When Do You Need an Apostille?

Apostilles are required for the use of public documents abroad. The most common reasons for needing an apostille include:

• Businesses expanding internationally: Companies establishing new branches overseas may need to provide documents such as Certificates of Incorporation or Articles of Association.
• Individuals relocating abroad: Whether for professional or educational purposes, individuals moving overseas often need to apostille documents such as degree certificates, birth certificates, or marriage certificates.
• Couples marrying abroad: Apostilles may be necessary to certify documents required for international weddings.

When a Country Does Not Recognise the Apostille

While most countries recognise the apostille under the 1961 Hague Convention, some, such as Thailand or Malaysia, do not. In these cases, Embassy Legalisation is required.

Embassy Legalisation involves having the embassy, consulate, or high commission of the country where the document will be used place their stamp on the apostilled document. This additional step ensures that the document is recognised as legally certified and accepted in that country.
